CG Dragons portrayed in cinema and series over the years

Dragons have been at the centre of the fantasy genre as they have captivated people over generations with their fire-breathing and flying antics. These glorious creatures of fantasy have been the favourites of not just authors and fans but filmmakers too. Here are some dragons that have won us over with their CGI attributes and intricacies.

Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal – Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Daenerys and dragon Drogon

Daenerys becomes a doting mother of dragons and raises her three scaly children, training them for the battle and nurturing them with the mother’s love. The most accurate and comprehensive dragons ever created on screen.

Smaug – The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Smaug

Using the technology of motion capture, Benedict Cumberbatch makes this dragon his own with his performance. He didn’t just voice the dragon, he became it by studying lizards at the London Zoo and wearing a motion-capture suit while acting out scenes. He even gets some tips from Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum in the franchise after which he also played Bagheera in his movie Mowgli using the same motion-capture technology.

Draco – DragonHeart (1996)

Draco

Having earned an Oscar nomination for visual effects, this movie features Draco voiced by Sean Connery, last of the dragons that could speak and star alongside real actors and computer-animated effects.

Elliot –
Pete’s Dragon (2016)

Pete’s Dragon

The original Disney film, which featured an animated, purple-haired Elliot, received a brilliant remake in 2016 starring Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard. Pete Healy, an orphan, travels with Grace, a ranger, to search his friend Elliot, a green dragon with wings after he disappears from the forest.

Dragon – Shrek (2001).

Dragon

Dragon is Donkey’s love interest and eventual wife from the Shrek franchise. She initially started out as an antagonist, charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her castle, but later reforms and helps Shrek as a supporting protagonist.
